Business and ADR Advisor, and Mentor
Gene Commander Inc
Gene’s extensive legal, business and community experience uniquely qualifies him to provide strategic insight for Colorado construction business owners and leaders, and the law firms that represent them. He is committed to providing the valuable thought leadership that industry professionals can lean on to make hard business and career choices, and he enjoys collaborating with successful entrepreneurs who are interested in promoting a new brand of business and deep sense of community. He supports leaders to grow and protect their businesses across a variety of areas, including ownership transfers, succession planning, corporate restructuring, enterprise risk management, executive compensation, and leadership development.
Gene previously served as the managing shareholder in Polsinelli’s Denver office, an Am Law 100 national law firm, from 2011 to 2015, while the office achieved dramatic growth in number of attorneys, breadth of legal services, revenue and facilities. After more than 35 years providing legal and ADR services to privately held and family-owned business clients from virtually every sector of the real estate development and construction industries, Gene retired from the practice of law in 2015 to form Gene Commander Inc, a commercial ADR business. For five years, Gene provided customized mediation and arbitration services to hundreds of Colorado businesses and their law firms to help them avoid the expense and uncertainty of civil litigation. Clients routinely retained him to provide strategic advice to their senior executives and board of directors, and to handle complex construction and commercial disputes before state and federal judges, arbitrators, government agencies and alternative dispute resolution forums.
With more than 20 years of experience as a commercial arbitrator and mediator, Gene stepped back from his role as an ADR neutral in 2020, with his business now focused on providing proactive business advice to construction professionals and the law firms that represent them.
Gene has a long history of engagement with the Associated General Contractors of Colorado. He co-founded its annual Executive Leadership Academy while serving as an AGC/C board member, and he has been a frequent instructor for the training program since its inception. Gene also as serves as a board member and cornerstone supporting sponsor for the Construction Education Foundation of Colorado. He whole-heartedly supports CEF’s commitment to grow its already successful skilled workforce development programs for high school and college students, veterans, and unemployed adults who are interested in rewarding construction careers.
He is also an associate member of the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA) – Colorado Chapter, a member of the Center for Legal Inclusiveness, and the American Arbitration Association has included him on its roster of approved arbitrators and mediators for the past 25 years.
Formerly, Gene was appointed by Denver Mayor Michael Hancock to serve on the Denver Urban Renewal Authority board of commissioners from 2016-2020. He was also chairperson of the Downtown Denver Partnership (DDP) and Denver Civic Ventures. In 2014, Gene received the Honorary Partner Award from DDP for his dedication to the Denver business community.
