Gene has more than 40 years of proven experience in the legal and construction industries. He led the Denver office of an Am Law 100 national firm and represented clients involved in domestic and international construction projects and business transactions. Today, he helps businesses grow and stay ahead of the curve by adopting innovative planning strategies across a variety of areas, including succession planning, business growth strategies, enterprise risk assessments, leadership and career development, and shareholder and executive compensation.
Gene served as the managing shareholder in Polsinelli’s Denver office from 2011 to 2015, while the office achieved dramatic growth in number of attorneys, breadth of legal services, revenue and facilities. Polsinelli’s clients thrived as the firm helped to position them at the intersection of law, industry, community and public affairs. He stepped away from the practice of law in 2015 to form Gene Commander, Inc., a commercial ADR business, where he provided customized mediation and arbitration services to hundreds of Colorado businesses and their law firms for the next five years to help them avoid the expense and uncertainty of civil litigation. Gene learned to be an effective consensus builder and problem solver through his legal and ADR experience resolving complex construction and commercial disputes in an amicable and business-like manner.
Since 2020, Gene’s business has been focused on providing proactive business counsel to law firm leaders and C-suite executives. Gene’s strategic executive-level planning provides the valuable thought leadership that leaders can lean on to make hard business decisions.
Gene has a long history of engagement with the Associated General Contractors of Colorado. He co-founded its annual Executive Leadership Academy while serving as an AGC/C board member, and he has been a frequent instructor and contributor to the training program curriculum since its inception. Gene also as serves as a board member and Cornerstone Supporting Sponsor for the Construction Education Foundation of Colorado. He whole-heartedly supports CEF’s commitment to grow its already successful skilled workforce development programs for high school and college students, veterans and unemployed adults who are interested in rewarding construction careers.
He is also an associate member of the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA) – Colorado Chapter, a member of the Center for Legal Inclusiveness, and the American Arbitration Association has included him on its roster of approved arbitrators and mediators for the past 25 years.
Formerly, Gene was appointed by Denver Mayor Michael Hancock to serve on the Denver Urban Renewal Authority board of commissioners from 2016-2020. He was also chairperson of the Downtown Denver Partnership (DDP) and Denver Civic Ventures. In 2014, Gene received the Honorary Partner Award from DDP for his dedication to the Denver business community.
